Google Product Category Finder

Type a product title or search term and get the matching Google product categories with full path and ID. English and German, all 5,595 categories, no login.

Search categories

The search runs over category names and paths in both languages. A hit in the category name counts three times, a hit in the parent path once. Compound words are matched on their head: Laufschuhe finds Schuhe, Kinderbett finds Kleinkinderbetten. On a tie, a subcategory ranks above its own parent; across branches the more general category comes first.

What is the Google product category?

The Google product category (feed attribute google_product_category) maps each product to a fixed node in the Google product taxonomy, a tree of 5,595 categories running up to 7 levels deep. It decides which Shopping vertical your product runs in, which attributes become mandatory, and who you bid against in the auction. If the attribute is missing, Google guesses the category from title, description, and GTIN, and with creative product names that guess goes wrong all the time.

How to assign it correctly

Four rules that make the difference in practice:

  1. 1Pick the deepest category that fits, not the top-level one. "Apparel & Accessories > Shoes" beats "Apparel & Accessories" whenever both apply.
  2. 2Write either the numeric ID or the full text path into google_product_category, never both. The ID is stable and language-neutral; the text path has to match the official list character for character.
  3. 3Search for the plain product noun, not the campaign name. The taxonomy knows "Dresses", but not "Midnight Velvet Breeze".
  4. 4Check the assignment per product, not per blanket rule. A catalog spanning several product groups always ends up too shallow under one rule.

Frequently asked questions

Both are allowed, but only one of them per product. The numeric ID is the more robust choice: it is language-neutral, survives renames in the taxonomy, and cannot carry a typo. The text path has to match the official list exactly, in language and spelling, including the " > " separators.

As deep as the taxonomy accurately allows for your product. The most common mistake is not the wrong top-level category but stopping too early in the tree: "Baby & Toddler" is correct but worthless if the product belongs under "Baby & Toddler > Baby Transport > Baby Strollers". Competition is thinner there and the purchase intent is clearer.

Google then assigns the category automatically from title, description, and GTIN. That often works for plain titles, but with marketing names and niche products the guess regularly lands too shallow or in the wrong branch. A wrong or too general category costs relevance in the auction and can trigger required attributes your feed does not provide.

The source is the official Google taxonomy file, version 2021-09-21 with 5,595 categories, the same file the FeedOptimizer.AI app works with. If Google publishes a new version, the file here gets replaced. Whether individual products in your Merchant Center carry a category warning is something Merchant Center Diagnostics or the free feed check will show you.

In the app, the AI does this per product

FeedOptimizer.AI assigns every product the matching Google product category automatically, picked from a vetted candidate list of the official taxonomy. The free feed check shows you first how many of your products are categorized too shallow or not at all today.
