That's the finding from an analysis of roughly 298,000 products across four industries in the FeedOptimizer.AI database (August 2026), looking at which industry-specific title formula actually fits each segment: vehicle parts, golf equipment, apparel, and arts and crafts.
The title isn't the whole story. Vehicle parts titles average 67.1 out of 100 on the title component alone, mediocre but not disastrous. The total score still drops to 41.2 because the quality score is built from six components: title, description, attributes, product details, Google product category (GPC), and highlights. For vehicle parts, description scores only 55.5, and titles average 86 characters, the shortest of all four industries. A single "write better titles" fix won't move this number. The problem sits in the underlying data structure.

Methodology: 298,000 products across four industries
This analysis covers the 15 largest Google product categories (GPC) in FeedOptimizer.AI's dataset, grouped into four industries by shared parent category. All figures are aggregated and anonymized. No individual store data is exposed.

Vehicle parts alone make up 67% of everything analyzed. That's not a skew we're smoothing over, it's the point: the largest industry in the dataset is also the weakest one. We've already looked at how much title length alone drives score, across industries, in our analysis of 324,000 product titles. The gap between industries: 29.3 points
The best- and worst-scoring industries in our dataset sit 29.3 quality-score points apart, more than double the gap between title score and description score within vehicle parts (67.1 vs. 55.5, an 11.6-point gap). Which industry you sell in predicts more of your score than any single optimization tweak.

Key insight: According to FeedOptimizer.AI benchmark data from August 2026, arts and crafts sits at a 98.1% optimization rate, essentially fully covered. Vehicle parts sits at just 55.1%. That's not a coincidence. Arts and crafts titles are structurally simple: product name, material, color, quantity, easy to automate reliably. Vehicle parts need vehicle fitment, OEM numbers, and exact compatibility, attributes that many feeds simply don't maintain cleanly. The low optimization rate is itself a symptom of the problem, not a footnote to it.
Golf equipment sits at 50.2, closer to vehicle parts than to apparel, even though its title score (89.0) is almost on par with arts and crafts. Something other than the title is dragging the total down here too, more on that below.
The apparel paradox: more text, lower score
Inside "apparel," shoes and clothing sit 38.6 points apart, and shoes have the longer description. This is the sharpest single finding in the dataset: industry alone doesn't explain the variance, product type within the industry does.

More likely: shoes need precise attributes like size, width, and fit, correctly populated in the category or product details, while clothing's standard structure (size, color, material) is easier to detect automatically. Optimizing for title or description length alone misses the lever that actually matters for shoes.

The generic "golf (general)" bucket scores best at 77.3, while the specific equipment categories (golf clubs, golf gloves) sit at 47 to 48. Arts and crafts shows no such pattern: all seven of its categories cluster within nine points of each other (65.0 to 74.0). Golf equipment clearly needs a different approach per product type. Arts and crafts doesn't.
Title formulas that fit the industry
There's no universal title formula, because different industries have different purchase-decision attributes. Here's the formula per segment covered in this dataset, informed by our data plus established industry practice:
Vehicle parts: Brand + vehicle compatibility + part type + OEM/manufacturer number. Example: "Bosch Front Brake Pads for VW Golf 7 2013-2020, OEM# 1K0698151." Per Fullmoon Digital's guide for auto parts retailers, GTIN, MPN, product_type, and Google product category are among the most important supplemental attributes here. In our data, these are exactly the fields many vehicle parts feeds leave incomplete, which lines up with our 55.5 description score.
Golf equipment: Brand + model + club/equipment type + core attribute (shaft flex, handicap range, size). The spread between 47.2 (golf clubs) and 77.3 (generic) suggests many golf titles are still missing the model name or the core spec attribute.
Apparel: Brand + gender + material/attribute + product type + color + size for clothing. For shoes, add size, width, and fit as required attributes, because our data shows that's where the real score lever sits, not text length.
Arts & crafts: Product type + material + quantity/size + color. This industry's 98.9 average title score already shows what a working formula looks like: short, structured, no unnecessary padding.
What this means for your store
- Check the description before you touch the title. For vehicle parts (55.5) and apparel, description is the weaker lever, not title. A title-only fix barely moves the total score.
- Benchmark against your specific sub-category, not the industry. 38.6 points separate shoes from clothing. Compare your numbers against the most specific Google product category that matches your catalog, not the broad industry label.
